Hands-free language lessons for the car
Fluent by the next exit.
FluentMiles is the language lesson you play in the car instead of a playlist. Hear a phrase, say it back, and get instant feedback, all without touching your phone.
For iPhone with iOS 26 or later. Route 1 is free in all nine languages.
How it works
Hear it. Say it. Hear how you did.
A drive is a conversation with a calm coach riding shotgun. It talks, you talk back, and it adapts as you go.
-
Hear it
An English narrator sets up each phrase, and a native voice says it through your car speakers over CarPlay or Bluetooth, or through the iPhone speaker.
-
Say it
Two soft rising notes mean it's your turn. Say the phrase out loud. Speech recognition runs on your iPhone, so your voice stays there.
-
Get instant feedback
"Nice!" when you nail it. "Close. Listen once more." when you're almost there. A phrase you miss comes back later in the same drive, and spaced review brings it back when it's due.
-
Eyes on the road
Once a lesson starts, you never need the screen. Use your steering-wheel buttons, or say "repeat", "slower", "skip" or "pause".
Languages
Nine languages, taught from English
Every language gets the same full course. For languages with their own script, passengers and the Phrasebook show a romanization you can read.
- Español Spanish Latin American Spanish, from Mexico
- Français French French from France
- Italiano Italian Italian from Italy
- Português Portuguese Brazilian Portuguese
- Deutsch German German from Germany
- 日本語 Japanese Standard Japanese (Tokyo) Hepburn romaji
- 中文(普通话) Mandarin Chinese Mainland China, simplified characters Pinyin with tone marks

- Русский Russian Moscow standard Romanized, with stress marks

The course
What's in the course
Six Routes take you from your first hello to real conversations. Each Route has five Exits, so that's 30 lessons and 301 phrases in every language.
- Route 1First WordsFree
- Route 2Survival Kit
- Route 3Me & My People
- Route 4Out & About
- Route 5Plans & Time
- Route 6Real Conversations
30 Exits per language
Most Exits teach new phrases, then play a short conversation and let you join in with a role-play. Most take 12 to 18 minutes, or 9 to 12 if you pick Quick lessons.
Road Tests
The last Exit of Routes 2 to 6 is a Road Test: no new words, just recall of what you've learned, plus a longer conversation.
Six songs
Short original chants, spoken in rhythm over a beat, from The Hello Song to The Week Song. Two are free.
Quick Review
A short drive with up to 12 phrases that are due for review. Nothing due? It mixes in phrases you've practiced before.
Phrasebook
Every phrase you've practiced, grouped by Exit, with search, favorites, a strength meter and tap-to-hear. For when you're parked.
Miles and Road Trips
Watch your miles of practice add up, and keep a Road Trip going: days in a row with at least 5 minutes of practice. Badges mark the milestones.
Leaderboards
Optional Game Center leaderboards for minutes and miles this week, all-time miles, phrases learned and the longest Road Trip, with friends or everyone. Add friends, compare side by side, and challenge them. Off until you turn them on.
Passenger Mode
Riding, not driving? Passenger Mode shows each phrase on screen with big buttons for "Hear again", "Slower" and "Skip".
Start with Siri
Say "Start FluentMiles" to play your next Exit, or "Quick Review in FluentMiles" to review.
Safety and privacy
Built for the car. Private by design.
FluentMiles is not a navigation app. It never changes your maps, your directions or the language of anything else on your phone.
Navigation and calls always win
Spoken directions from your navigation app, phone calls and Siri pause the lesson. It picks up again when they're done.
Nothing to read while driving
Drive Mode is one giant pause button. Hold it for a second to end the lesson. Setup, settings and purchases happen while you're parked.
Works with no signal
Lessons, voices and answer checking work offline, out on rural highways too. You need a connection only for one-time downloads, subscribing and Game Center.
Your voice stays on your iPhone
Speech recognition and grading run on the device. Your voice is never recorded, stored or sent anywhere.
No account needed
No sign-up, email or password. Your progress lives on your iPhone, and you can export it or delete it in Settings.
No ads, no tracking
The app has no analytics or advertising code and doesn't track you. Read the privacy policy.
Set up your lesson before you drive, keep your eyes on the road, and follow local laws about phone use. If anything ever needs your attention, pull over first.

FAQ
Questions, answered
Is it safe to use while driving?
FluentMiles is designed so you never have to look at or touch your iPhone once a lesson starts. Mount your phone, set up before you go, and follow local laws about phone use. Calls, Siri and navigation prompts pause the lesson. If anything needs your attention, pull over first.
Will it change my maps or directions?
No. FluentMiles never changes, translates or replaces your map or navigation app. Your navigation app gives directions as usual, and its spoken prompts pause the lesson.
Does it work with CarPlay?
Yes, as audio. Lessons play through CarPlay or Bluetooth like any audio app, and your steering-wheel buttons work. There's no FluentMiles screen on the CarPlay display yet.
Do I need cell signal?
No. Lessons, voices and answer checking all work offline. You need a connection once to download a language's listening model or better voices, and to subscribe or use Game Center.
What do I need?
An iPhone with iOS 26 or later. It works with the car's audio, a headset, or the iPhone speaker.
How long is a lesson?
Most Exits take 12 to 18 minutes played in full. Pick Quick lessons and most take 9 to 12. A Road Test takes 8 to 10 minutes either way. You can stop any time: progress from any drive of 20 seconds or more is saved.
What if it doesn't understand me?
You'll hear "Close. Listen once more." and the phrase again, slowly, for another try. FluentMiles never says "wrong". If the microphone is off, lessons run in listen-and-repeat mode: you say each phrase out loud, then hear the answer.
Can my passenger use it?
Yes. Passenger Mode shows the phrases on screen with big buttons, and you can switch to it before a drive.
Is it on Android?
Not right now. FluentMiles is for iPhone.
When can I get it?
FluentMiles isn't on the App Store yet. The App Store buttons on this site will link to it as soon as it is.
